{"id":1807,"date":"2013-04-05T21:25:41","date_gmt":"2013-04-05T19:25:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.matthieuricard.org\/the-eight-main-buddhist-sacred-places-of-india\/"},"modified":"2013-04-05T21:25:41","modified_gmt":"2013-04-05T19:25:41","slug":"the-eight-main-buddhist-sacred-places-of-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.matthieuricard.org\/en\/the-eight-main-buddhist-sacred-places-of-india\/","title":{"rendered":"The eight main Buddhist sacred places of India"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry_content\">\n<p>From December 9th to 26th, a group of pilgrims, led by Yangsi Khyentse Rinpoche and Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, visited the 8 major Buddhist sacred places of Nepal and India, to consecrate 8 Stupas that were built, one in each place, in fulfillment of the wishes of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991). About 60 monks and another 50 disciples from a dozen countries joined the journey.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Buddha himself spoke about four main places worthy of pilgrimage for his followers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u2022\tLumbini, his birth place, in Nepal<br \/>\n<br \/>\n\u2022\tBodh-Gaya, the place in India where he achieved enlightenment<br \/>\n<br \/>\n\u2022\tSarnath (near Varanasi), where he delivered his first teaching.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n\u2022\tKusinagar, where he passed into Parinirvana.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFour other sites also became considered to be important places of pilgrimage, thus defining \u201fEight Buddhist Sacred Places\u201d. The four latter ones are:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u2022\tShravasti, where the Buddha spent the largest amount of time and conducted 22 rainy season summer retreats.
